On today’s episode, Holly and Tabby dive into a few age-old questions about plant-based lifestyles. Can carnists enjoy the nutritional benefits of a vegan diet without committing to a vegan lifestyle? To answer this question, Tabby discusses the outcome of a pilot study that explored the impacts that a vegan diet can have on the human body. Tabby also highlights some research available to consumers and physicians that are interested in learning more about the benefits of a vegan diet.
There are many questions surrounding the long-term benefits and consequences to following a vegan diet. Remember, there is a difference between a whole foods plant based diet and a vegan diet. Plant-Based Nation explored this variation in terminology in an earlier blog post.
It is also worth noting that most physicians lack the necessary knowledgebase to understand that it is possible to meat all of one’s nutritional and dietary needs as a vegan. The trick, as any good research study will tell you, is that you need to consume a varied diet of plants, fortified plant based milks, legumes, nuts, fruits, grains, and restrict any reliance you may have on processed foods. If you have not already done so, be sure to check out Plant-Based Nation resources page for more information for the “Skeptical Physician.”
